History of the Timbers....

The Welland Canal...an incredible feat of engineering...

The Welland Canal which is 26 miles long and 27 feet deep, was built to circumvent Niagara Falls while connecting Lake Ontario to Lake Erie in the 1820's by the Merrit-Welland Company. Initially built to stimulate regional trade, the Welland Canal has become a vital link for international trade connecting the Atlantic Ocean with the heartlands of North America.

As the builders of the original canal were a private company they chose to use wood beams as the most economical way of building the waterway. These Girder Sticks which came from lock eight were reclaimed during one of many excavation projects of the past century while modernizing the Welland Canal. Lock number eight, a regulating lock, one of the longest in the world, makes the final adjustment to Lake Erie's level.

These timbers or girders sticks, the last seven remaining in existance, are crafted by Bullock & Company into plank flooring 24" wide with lengths up to 45' long.
